OUT OF PLACE - OUT OF TIME
is a compelling, intimate documentary that reveals the historical
circumstances and the contemporary issues facing Palestinian refugees
in Lebanon today.
In 2003, an Australian named Stefan Markworth went to live in
the Palestinian refugee camp of Bourj el Barajneh, in Beirut,
Lebanon. There he began making his first documentary film. For
six months Markworth lived amongst and interviewed people of different
generations, working in English and Arabic.
The resulting film takes the audience beyond media stereotypes
to find out about the realities of the lives of ordinary people
in camp. This is a world where cultural and communal identity,
social and economic concerns, collective human rights and individual
aspirations are all to some extent defined and conditioned by
camp life.
Despite being oppressed, denied their rights and living in limbo
as refugees for more than 55 years, the people in camp express a
spirit of resilience and a thriving, unique identity. This film
invites the audience to share the experience of exploring this spirit.
